Miss Lily and friends turned the vendor village into a beach at
the All Star Revue in New Jersey. |
[The following note on Eurojam was accidently left out of last month's
column.]
EuroJam 2002 was a gathering of talented balloon artists, some
newbies and plenty of die-hard balloonies like me, that wanted to improve
their skills. The atmosphere was amazing, with 24 hour jamming (some
people didn't sleep for days), creative juices flowing, and
a crowd of people willing to share ideas and techniques.
The venue was wonderful and, thanks to the sponsors, became filled with
hundreds of balloon sculptures during just a few days. Event sponsors
provided a never-ending supply of 260's, 350's and other modelling
balloons.

I arrived at the All Star Revue 2002 with much anticipation (and
luggage). The opportunities for attending classes and networking with
others proved invaluable, and Fun & Games night was like meeting up
with old friends for a night of all-out craziness. It was like Marjorie and
Don from Hi-Float welcomed the whole gang over to their place for pizza and
drinks. The games filled the room with laughter. The next couple of days
were spent taking lots of notes the camera into overload.
Of course, the event wasn't only about fun. A very diverse class selection
provided attendees a way to use products from various manufacturers.
Classes ranged from designing and selling wedding decor with Gwen Hartman
to twisting letters, numbers, and just about anything else with Marvin
Hardy. Pat Wilson was a huge hit with in her classes. She taught everyone
how to make use of recycled materials, including cardboard and old foil
balloons, to create unusual display pieces. Gary Ledbetter's class on
animated sculptures produced a working ferris wheel that became a topic
conversation during the final night party. Those were just a few of the
highlights from among the more than two dozen well-known and novice
instructors.
ASR provides a warm and friendly environment for learning. The classes are
well-prepared, instructors are always willing to give extra input outside
of the classroom, and there is no shortage of food (day or night)! Thanks
are due to the sponsors and vendors that supported the event. Your
continued support is truly appreciated. To the hosts themselves, Mark,
Andrea, Jimmy, and Dyane, it's always nice to be welcomed into your home.

New rule: BHQ will no longer allow any commercial announcements
on the email lists
Due to feedback from members and sponsors, we have updated our
policy regarding posting to the Entertainer and Decorator Email forums.
In the past, we invited those with new products or new information
regarding their services to post a single notice about that to the
e-mailing
lists. As Internet usage has evolved and the BHQ audience has grown, it
has become difficult to determine which announcements should be
classified as "informative" and which others "commercial".
Since the BHQ Classified ads and Press Release sections
have proven to be both popular and easy
to use, we've decided to no longer allow any commercial announcements on
the lists. Those with new products, updates to old products (or web
sites), events, and used equipment for sale are directed to the
classified ads. Sponsors at all levels are, as always, encouraged to
send announcements to announce@balloonhq.com to be included with the
monthly press releases. We are not looking to reduce the amount of
useful content on BHQ. We are very thankful to the members and
sponsors of BHQ that support our efforts. This change will simply help us
to keep things more organized, and remove the amibiguities in the mailing
list rules.
Enforcement of BHQ Policies
Please note that only information provided by the BHQ editors should be
taken as representative of our policies and beliefs. It has been brought to
our attention that some BHQ users have received email from people claiming
to speak for BHQ, "instructing" them about "proper" use of BHQ. Some
of the messages that have been forwarded to us have been quite
nasty. The official BHQ staff list is found on the editors page in the BHQ Guide.
If you receive email from anyone else claiming to speak for, or represent,
BHQ, please forward that email to bhq-admin@balloonhq.com.

Changes to the Photo viewing pages
The balloon photo pages have proven to be far more popular than we ever
could have imagined a few years ago. With nearly 9000 photos now online,
the all-inclusive photo database index page was getting to be
very unwieldly. Now when visiting the main photo page, most web site
visitors will only be able to see an index of photos uploaded in the last
14 days. BHQ members will still be able to view (and search)
all photos in the collection.
Cheryl Skoric of Bouquets & Balloons out of Portland Oregon shows some
very different looking photos in her portfolio. Her larger than life
sporting displays grabbed our attention.
