After several years of fighting, it's time to report that, at least for the time being, we've won the spam battle. The mailing list turn-around time on message delivery has returned to the speed we enjoyed in the pre-spam days. You're probably all as tired of reading about spam measures on BHQ as we are writing about them. But this was exciting news we wanted to share.
As the spam problem got worse over the last few years, it became necessary to have a moderator checking all messages on the mailing lists before forwarding them on to all of you. We never moderated for content beyond checking to see if it was spam. That meant that mailing list subscribers continued to have free and open discussions. Unfortunately, the human spam checker slowed down discussions and interfered with our ability to develop new content on BHQ, as our moderator had to waste his time doign manual filtering.
Since the addition of Postini filtering, we have removed the human moderator. For the last month, you've been enjoying rapid delivery of email sent to the lists and we've been able to reassign John to more interesting tasks. Only one piece of spam has gotten through the mailing lists.
Last month Sheena provided some tips for photo uploads. In that, she mentioned the need for properly categorizing your photos to make them all easier for others to find. We've been listening to your suggestions for improved photo categories for quite some time. All of you seem to have different ideas of what constitutes improvements. Some want more specific categories. Others asked that we add major new topics.
We've taken a stab at it and have added a number of new categories and tried to group them in more logical ways. We know this isn't finished. As all of our artwork evolves, there will be a need to further changes. At least for now, this will at least make things easier for all of us. You can help by looking at all of your own photos and determining if there are better ways of categorizing the ones already in the database.
