BHQ Year in Review

How in the heck can it be 2005 already? Weren't we just preparing for Y2K a week or so ago?

As always, the Balloon HQ team dealt with a healthy load of technical issues this year. Big projects included continuation of the spam wars, adding features for the photo database (see article below), and establishing new agreements for our server hardware and ISP support. Luckily, our intrepid staff of John Barthelmes and Debbie Piotrowski have stayed with us. Mark, Larry and I are lucky to have such loyal and hard-working people representing Balloon HQ.

2004 was filled with a wide array of balloon education events. Balloon HQ representatives showed their faces (and did varying degrees of other stuff) at Twist & Shout, the Halloween and Party Show, the 20th anniversary of IBAC, the IBA annual meeting, Summer Balloon Camp, Balloons Around the World, Balloon Manor, and BalloonTownUSA. That's more events than ever before, which illustrates why we had to miss out on some other great events like Ballooniversity, the first ever asian twisters convention, the All Star Revue, TJAM on the Road, and other events in the US and abroad. Hardly a week went by on the Calendar without some learning opportunity being offered somewhere in the world.

Winning the Crystal Award was, of course, a high point of our year. However, the best benefit we get from the BHQ is the wonderful relationships we've earned with balloon professionals around the world. We're looking forward to 2005, expanding BHQ services, and visiting with our friends as often as possible. Happy New Year from Sheena, Mark and Larry!

BHQ Photo Database: Tips for Photo Uploads

The photo database was released to BHQ Members for individual photo uploads in June of 2001. By December of that year, over 3,400 photos had been uploaded. For the first time, new photos were being uploaded on a daily basis, a situation which prompted us to write the article "How-to: Searching the BHQ Photo Database." Various updates about photos and portfolios followed, including a discussion on Image Quality in November of 2002 and feature additions in 2004 for Embedded Portfolios, Photo Print Features, and Entertainer/Decorator Hyperlink Shortcuts.

As of this writing, over 21,000 photographs have been archived. It seems a good time to review tips for uploading photos, keeping search strategies in mind. The discussion thread about Photo Searches and Upload Tips from 18 Oct 2002 seems a good place to start. Some highlights from that discussion include:

Provide a detailed title that clearly defines the photo content.
Try not to think short-term. No one will be able to rediscover that great Monster Truck sculpture of yours if you enter "Front View" or "Beep Beep" or "my favorite from the Friday Jam" as the Title.
Categorize your entry.
Every photo should fit into at least one category. Classify the 'sculpture type' (or people, or non-balloon) and modify the information by adding in genre (animal, parody, wedding) or information about special techniques (distortion, special effects).
Evaluate your photo content objectively. Double check the text and categories you've provided.
Focus on the subject matter, rather than the type of event for which the sculpture was created. Are the stripped columns you made for a local sporting event really classifiable as 'sports', or are they better generalized as 'classic decor'?
Could someone easily find this picture in the database? Try some practice searches, after you've uploaded a few photos. Can you find your photos searching for categories alone? Can you use one or two key words to find your photos by Title or Description?

Glynis Sylvia writes:

I have occasionally asked a person by private email to amend their photo title or description to include a key word so I, and others, can find their balloon once it's gone from the current pages. It helps everyone to have a good search experience.
