Key To My Heart

by Ralph Dewey

The Balloon HQ challenge for February is to make an unusual balloon heart.

Since Valentine's Day is about here, I thought that I would share some new ideas for that holiday. The first one is a "Key to My Heart" sculpture from a #160 balloon. I'll show some variations of the idea later.

Balloon Key

Start by making the handle of the key. Inflate a #160 fully except for about 2" and tie off the nozzle. Twist off two 1/2" bubbles and ear twist them. Twist off an 18" bubble and twist-connect the ends together. Shape it into an oval.

Now twist off a 10" bubble and bubbles in this order, 1/2" (ear twist), 3", 1/2" (ear twist), 3" and another 3". Fold the first two 3" bubbles and twist-connect them as shown. Tie and cut off any excess balloon.

The bit of the key is made from a short inflated section of a #160 balloon. Twist off bubbles in this order, 1", 1/2" (ear twist), 1", 1" 1/2" (ear twist) and 1". Tie and cut off any excess balloon. Place the center of the balloon between the two 3. bubbles on the first balloon.

Three other types of keys can be made by modifying the design slightly. By using a soft length of balloon the key's bit can be shaped into a heart. By making the handle loop soft, it can be shaped into a heart. You can also use a 6" heart in place of the bit.

You can even use this sculpture as a novel "Key to the City".

Padlock

To go along with the key, I have two padlock ideas. The first idea is made from an inflated section of #160 and a red 6" heart balloon. Make two small ear twists on both ends of a soft 12" section of a white #160. Discard the excess. Bend the balloon into a 'U' shape to be the shackle. If the balloon bubble isn't soft, it will be difficult to make it retain its curved shape. Inflate the heart balloon and glue the ends of the 'U' shape to it as shown. Draw the keyhole on it.

The second version takes a little more work to build, but it has the capability of being locked and unlocked. Inflate a #260 balloon bully except for about 2-1/2" and tie off the nozzle. Twist off three 6" bubbles and tie their ends together. This forms a triangle. Twist off three more 6" bubbles and also tie their ends together. Hold them side by side and rotate both middle bubbles to lock them in place.

Inflate a 6" heart to about 50% capacity and tie off the nozzle. Attach the knot to the corner of the triangle which already has two knots. Push the heart balloon inside of the triangle. It should fit snuggly. Draw a keyhole on the heart balloon with a marker.

Lock014 Lock015

Make the shackle from an inflated section of a #160 balloon. Twist off a 1/2" bubble and ear twist it. Then twist off a soft 14" bubble. Twist off another 1/2" and ear twist it. Tie and cut off any excess balloon. Twist-connect the first ear twist at one of the top corners of the padlock. The other ear twist gets barely wedged in place near the opposite top corner. This allows you to be able to open the lock by pulling the ear twist out. Mark the key hole to complete the padlock
