Light Bulb Hat

by Ralph Dewey

The Balloon HQ challenge this month is a hat or other balloon design that uses a light bulb.

Not only does this hat look cool by itself, but it can also be used as part of a theme party or campaign. For example, at a corporate brain-storming session, each participate would have their hat printed with, "Acme has bright ideas". It would be a fun way to break the ice and get those ideas flowing. For Christian events it could be printed with, "Share the Light". For weight-loss groups have, "Eat Light", printed on them.

You will need a yellow 9" round balloon, a white #321 bee body balloon, a gray #160 balloon and two purple #260 balloons. And if you only make the light bulb you will need a black 5" round balloon.

Hat Base

Fully inflate a purple #260 balloon except for 1-1/2" and tie off the nozzle. You might want to stretch the balloon by stroking your hand along the length of the balloon once or twice. Twist off a 1" bubble and ear-twist it. Twist off a 10" bubble and a 1" bubble. Ear-twist the 1" bubble. Twist off another 10" bubble and a 1" bubble. Ear-twist the 1" bubble. Twist off a third 10" bubble. Twist-connect it to the first 1" ear twist to form a triangle shape. You should have a bubble about 11" long remaining.

Inflate the second purple #260 balloon fully except for about 5" and tie off the nozzle. Twist off two 10" bubbles. Cut and tie off the end and discard the excess balloon. Attach the nozzle knot to one of the 1" ear twists of the first blue balloon. Attach the other knot to the other 1" ear twist on the first purple balloon. Place the 1" nipple end bubble from the hat base toward the inside of the hat. This will make a pyramid hat shape.

Light Bulb

Fully inflate the yellow 9" balloon and tie off the nozzle. Set it aside. Inflate a white #321 bee body balloon to about 4" long and tie off the nozzle. Take a 5" long scrap piece of a #260 and tie it around the knot. Make an apple out of the #321 balloon. While you are holding the captured knot (near the nipple end), snip the nipple end of the balloon in order to let out the air. Then tie the nipple end around the captured knot so that it will not come untied. Using the nipple end of the #321, attach it by wrapping it around the top of the hat base.

To make the threads of the light bulb, fully inflate a gray #160 except for about 2" and tie off the nozzle. Twist off a 3/8" bubble and ear-twist it. Then twist off a 10" bubble and fold-twist the ends. Twist off a 3/8" bubble and another 10" bubble. Fold-twist the ends of the 10" bubble together. Twist off a 3/8" bubble and another 10" bubble. Fold-twist the ends of the 10" bubble together. Twist off another 3/8" bubble and ear twist it. Cut and discard the excess balloon. Shape the three loops to be round.

Tie the knot of the 9" balloon to the scrap piece of the #260 (which is sticking out of the top of the apple balloon) through the three gray loops of the light bulb threads.

Light Bulb Only

To make only the light bulb, use a 5" black round balloon inflated to only about 3". Tie the 9" round balloon and the black round balloon together.
