The Balloon HQ challenge this month is an action balloon.
This month I'll explain how to make a tumbling clown balloon sculpture. It can be made very simple, very detailed or somewhere in between. My version is fairly simple. You can make it out of #160 or #260 balloons. My version for this article uses #260 balloons. Let's get started. Inflate a yellow #260 balloon to about 10 inches and tie off the nozzle. Form a very small apple twist (the hat) on the nozzle end. Twist off a 1-1/2" bubble (the head) and two 1/2" bubbles (the neck). Ear twist the two 1/2" bubbles. Twist off a 2-1/2" bubble (the torso) and two 1/2" bubbles (the waist). Ear twist the two 1/2" bubbles. Tie off and discard the excess yellow balloon.
To make the arms you will need a green #260. Inflate it to about 10 inches and tie off the nozzle. Twist off a 1/2" bubble (the hand) and two 1/2" bubbles (ruffles at the cuff). Ear twist the two 1/2" bubbles. Twist off two 2-1/2" bubbles (the arms) and two 1/2" bubbles (the other ruffles at the cuff). Ear twist the two 1/2" bubbles. Twist off a 1/2" bubble (the other hand). Tie off and discard the excess green balloon. Twist-connect the middle of the two green arms to the neck of the yellow balloon.
To make the legs you will need a green #260. Sometimes I am able to use the discarded balloon left over from making the arms. If not, inflate about 12" and tie of the nozzle. Twist off two 3/4" bubbles (the first foot). Ear twist them. Twist off two 3-1/2" bubbles (the legs) and two 3/4" bubbles (the other foot). Ear twist the two 3/4" bubbles. Tie off and discard the excess balloon. Twist-connect the middle of the two green legs to the waist of the yellow balloon.
Decorate the face and buttons of the clown. Inflate an 8" section of a #260 balloon. Tie the nozzle to the waist (at the back) of the clown. To make the clown do cartwheels on a table, simply rotate the 8" balloon.
