Okay, it may sound rather grandiose, and, of course, I am biased since I earn my livelihood with balloons, but it is true.
Actually, I believe, it is a universal fact. Any person, and I mean every single person, that works with balloons will attest to my statement. From the hobbyist that makes balloon swords and dogs at the family party to twisters that bring smiles to delighted recipients around the world; from the DIY mom decorating her living room to a team of balloon decorators transforming an arena into an Under-the-Sea extravaganza, we in the business know that balloons simply imply fantastical things.
It does not matter if you are a twister or a decorator, balloons can be used as the perfect self-esteem building tool. We can harness the positive energy that surrounds balloons and direct it all into, quite literally, life changing events for individuals.
If you are looking to make an impact at any time of year look no further than your own bag of balloons and pump. To clarify, I do not mean volunteering your entertainment services as a twister, nor do I mean donating a room full of decor to some charitable event.
I do mean to lead a workshop on twisting or decorating basics. I have been volunteering as a recreational therapist for several years at a residential facility for kids. These kids usually come from backgrounds that are unimaginable to most people. Through balloon twisting workshops we have a lot of fun and the kids can:
Naturally, the benefits listed also apply to all kinds of participants in different settings, young and not so young. I have presented workshops to school groups, clubs and organizations. In some cases I donate my services, in other cases I accept an honorarium or charge a fee.
Deciding on your own workshop goals can be whatever you are comfortable doing, for any length of time. 30-, 45- and 60-minute increments seem most popular depending on the age of attendees and the goals involved. You can teach the most basic elements of twisting or décor and create simple hats or a stacked centerpiece. Or you can teach the more complex components of advanced twisting pieces or decor designs, and even facilitate corporate team building programs.
Benefits do not stop with the attendees. You, the workshop leader, will discover it is an excellent way to:
Furthermore, leading workshops is a great way to connect with others, whether
they are for children or adults, disadvantaged or not. Strong connections lead
to strong relationships in your personal and professional life and who would not
want that?
