Balloons Around the World started as Balloons Across America, after I did some random ballooning one day - after receiving permission from the City Manager - for various city employees. The reaction was so good, I decided to do it on a national level. As it might be obvious, it turned global the next year.
In a nutshell, balloon artists donate an hour or more of their time to a good cause in their community. Being part of an international event helps focus effort and attention balloon artists' efforts so that the press has an angle to connect to. Already, artists in St. Louis, Hong Kong, Michigan and more are helping make the world a better place. Some people are teaching, some participating for Foster and Special Needs kids. You'd be amazed at the number of artists taking part and the variety of ways people are so giving of their time and talents. Check them out by heading to the website.
This year, as suggested by Ralph Dewey, we're suggesting that people take the time to raise their balloon skills up a notch or work with other artists in their area to make something really SUPER! Personally, I already bought a book and a set of DVDs to work up something new. I've also started dusting off the VCR and re-viewing some videos in my collection.
I can't stress enough my appreciation for John Barthelmes, Larry Moss, and all the folks at Balloon HQ, for helping to make this technically possible. And of course, that's double for all the artists who have and/or will be taking part in the celebration of latex sculpture. Without the generosity of all you great people, there simply would not be a Balloons Around The World. Thanks!
