BUILD A BOB

Magical Balloon Michael

While April Showers have a tendancy to take money away from street buskers, they also provide more time for playing around and bring lots of ideas, such as my new Build A Bob made with the new Qualatex 5" Man Face (or a 5" blush round and draw on your own face). I used the blush color but he looks good in Mocha as well. You will need a few balloons for this one. I used red, blue and yellow 260s, a blush 160 (any color will work since you will be using it to make raisins) and a yellow 160 for his belt.

Start off with the blue 260 inflating it all but about two inches. Twist off a 1" bubble followed by a 3" loop twist for one foot. Now make a 5" bubble for a leg then two 4" bubbles and lock twist these together.

Repeat this step so it looks kind of like an X. Make a 5" bubble, then a 3" loop twist and finish off with a 1" bubble for the other foot. Roll one of the 4" bubbles through the others to form a banana cluster for the top of his overalls. You can also tie them together with a scrap then wait until you finish the arms and use the ear twist to hold them together or any other method that you like to do this. You should have this now:

Set this aside and inflate the red 260 leaving a 6" tail. Make a 1" bubble and a 2" loop twist for one hand. Make a 5" bubble and two 1" ear twists for his collar. Make another 5" bubble, a 2" loop twist and finish off with a 1" bubble. Pop and tie off any remaining balloon.

Now we attach the two balloons together. I do this by pushing the two ear twists on the red through two of the bubbles in the banana cluster.

Take the blush 160 and tie four or five knots on top of each other to form a raisin. Trim off the balloon as close to the large knot as possible and repeat. Now take the rest of the blush 160 and cut it in half. Drop both raisins inside the blush 5" face balloon and inflate to about 4".

Grab one of the raisins through the blush where a ear would be and tie one of the blush 160 scrap pieces around it. Repeat on the other side so it looks like he has a pair of earrings. Inflate the yellow 260 leaving a 2" tail and make a 1" ear twist on the end. Wrap this around one of the earrings. Now wrap it around his head, make another ear twist and tie the other earring around it.

Wrap it back and forth around the head about four or five times to form a nice helmet. The last one should go over the closest one to the eyes to form a brim on his hat. Pop and tie off any remaining balloon.

Wrap the knot of the blush 5" round around the two ear twists on his shirt. You can even wrap it through and around his blue overalls if you like. Inflate a yellow 160 to about 6". Make a 1" ear twist and wrap the balloon around his waist for a belt. Tie the tail to the ear twist to secure it.

Here is the finished Build A Bob.

EXTRAS

For a few added extras you can follow Ralph Dewey's instructions for a Balloon Hammer but scale it down to size and put it in his hand. You can also take a black 260 and inflate it to about 4". Take a silver 260 and put a puff of air into it so it is rigid but not inflated. Cut off a 4" section of it and tie the two balloons together then make a 1" apple twist in the black so you now have a screwdriver.

Hope everyone learned something new that you can use. With a little practice this can be done for restaurant work but not for line work. This is great for birthday parties. My suggestion to you if you decide to do this for restaurant work is to pre-make about five sets of the raisins and insert them inside the heads. Place them in the same pocket of your apron or bag as the scraps so they are easy to grab quickly.

Until next month, Keep on twisting.
Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone.
