All Mixed Up

Magical Balloon Michael

Michael Philo

Welcome once again to the BalloonHQ Column section. This month I titled my article "All Mixed Up" because I will be writing about a few different things. Let's begin with more of the Betallatex Odd Shaped Balloons.

Small Bear Head Squid

Here is a Squid made from a Small Bear Head and three 260s. Fully inflate the Betallatex Small Bear Head and burp it. Tie the knot high up on the nozzle so as to form a point. Twist both ears of the bear head and twist them together. This forms the eyes of the Squid

Image Image

Now inflate all three 260s and find the middle. Twist them together and then twist them around the eyes of the Squid. If you like you can add a beak with a scrap of 260. This is super fast and kids love it.

Image

Doll Shape Squid

The Doll Shape Squid is basically the Small Bear Squid but a little bigger. Inflate the Doll Shape balloon until it looks like a football. Force the air into the top part of the balloon and split it in two. You'll be doing this again a little later when making the Doll Shape Fish. I won't bore you with all the instructions because they are the same as the Small Bear Squid at this point. I have never added a beak to my squids, I am not sure why. I just like them like this and the Small Bear Head and Doll Shape both give it great eyes and a point on the top of the head.

Mouse

Now lets throw in a Qualatex 11" Polka Dot. Put a raisin into a 11" Polka Dot balloon and inflate it to about 10". Burp and tie it off. Fully inflate a Small Bear Head (same color please) and give it a burp. Tie it as well.

Image Image

Make a 2 or 3" bubble in both balloons at the knot and ear twist them like so.

Image Image

Twist the two ear twists around each other. Now it has a neck. Take a 260 and fully inflate it giving it a good burp. Find the middle and tie the knot to the middle to form a banjo.

Image Image

Twist the banjo into a figure eight. Now grab the raisin thru the polka dot balloon and wrap it around the figure eight. You can also use glue dots for this part but I like the way a raisin holds better.

Image Image

Now take another 260 and blow it up half way, make a 1" bubble, a 3" loop twist and a 6" bubble. Repeat backwards, 6" Bubble, 3" loop twist, 1" bubble. Pop and tie the remaining balloon. Retwist the middle bubble and wrap it around the ear twist that make the mouse's neck.

Small Bear Head Fish

You will need one Small Bear Head, a Betalatex 6" Heart of matching color and a 260 of any type or color. Start by inflating the bear head until the ears start to inflate like the photo below, kinda like a cat face. This next part is a little tricky. Squeeze the air into one of the ears and twist it. Then twist that bubble in half like so.

Image Image

Now repeat so you have this. This forms the eyes and lips of the fish.

Image Image

Inflate the heart fully and tie it to the bear head.

Image Image

Inflate the 260 leaving about 4 inches of a tail and tie it between the heart and bear head. Make a 1" pinch twist. Make a 5 to 6" bubble, two loop twists for the fins and then a 1 to 2" bubble. Wrap the balloon onto the lips of the bear head fish. Make two more loop twists for cheeks, a 2" bubble, and then wrap the balloon around the eyes.

Image Image

Now make a bubble long enough to go around the rest of the fish and make a 1" bubble, pinch twist it and wrap this bubble around the tail fin (heart) and pop any remaining balloon. Here's the completed fish.

Image Image

Clown Head Fish

Inflate a Betallatex Clown Head leaving the nose under-inflated. Just like you did with the bear head squeeze the air into the nose and twist it then split that bubble into two.

Image Image

Inflate a 260 leaving a 4" tail and tie this to the knot on the Clown Head. Make a 6" bubble and wrap it around the eyes. Make a 1 to 2" bubble and two 1" pinch twists for lips. Now make a 1 to 2" bubble, two 3" loop twists and bring the balloon back to the tail. Use the remaining balloon or tie in another to make the fins.

Image Image

6" Heart Fish

This fish is done with a 6" Heart. I'm using a Ivory Silk heart. Fully inflate the heart and tie it off. Tie on a 160 thats is blown up leaving a 6" tail.

Image Image

Make two 1" ear twists to hide the knots. Now make a 5" bubble, two 2" loop twists for fins, a 2" bubble and two more 1" ear twists for lips. Bring the balloon back around the 6" heart and tie to the ear twist. Use the rest to make a tail fin.

Image Image

Use a 5" round or 6" heart inflated to about 3" and split it in two for eyes.

Image

As you can see all these fish have the same basic design and that is why I am not showing all the steps. The heart fish can also be done with a 5" round. If you use an Orange Round or Heart you'll get a great clown fish.

Doll Shape Fish

Inflate the Doll Shape balloon until it looks like a football. Force the air into the top part of the balloon and split it in two . . . are you seeing a pattern here?

Image Image

Now just finish this fish the way you did the others. Body, Fins, Cheeks, Mouth, Eyes (the split twist) and the Tail Fin.

Image Image

Another fish can be done with a 6" Link-O-Loon, a 5" round and two 260s.

Image Image Image

Getting back on the Odd Shapes you can use two 428s tied together and spiraled with a 3" bubble on the bottom of each for a great mermaid tail. ( If you don't know how to make a mermaid read Ralph Dewey's June Column). The 428 is also a great tree trunk.

Image Image

Christmas time....... Well not yet but when it's finally here you can make a great Santa Hat with a White 428, a Red 260 and a White 5" Round.

Image

Ok now we are going to continue on last months article and play with round balloons.

Bird in Egg

Start by inflating a 5" Bird Face to about 4" and tie off close to the top of the balloon. Now inflate a 9" White round to about 6" and tie it off high on the neck.

Image Image

Make an apple twist with the knot of the Bird Face.

Image

Heres the Flower Hat that I shared last month but this time I used a 5" Flowers around as the center.

Image

Bobber

Now I'm going to show you a very popular balloon for kids. It uses two 5" Rounds and a 350. Just inflate the rounds and tie them together. Now inflate a 350 leaving a 5" tail. Make two 3" ear twists and wrap the knots of the 5" rounds in between the ear twists for a great Bobber.

Image Image

I like to use a smile face top print for one or both of the rounds. The ear twist can also be made in the rounds.

Image

Blast Off Hat

Now my Rocket Hat, also known as a Blast off Hat. You will need a few balloons for this one. Lets start with a 321 bee body and a 160 of any color. Make a standard 321 Rocket as shown in the photo below. Now you'll need an 11" Globe Imprint and a raisin. I like to use the little craft beads like this one. Insert the bead into the 11" Globe and inflate it to about 10".

Image Image

Take a scrap of balloon and tie it around the raisin at the bottom of the globe (or the top depending on how you look at it) Wrap the scrap around the Rocket.

Image Image

Now take a 350, any color, fully inflated and give it a burp. Make a 10" bubble then wrap the balloon around the person's head splitting it in the middle. Tie the knot of the globe into the split that you just made and tie the knot of the 350 onto the rocket. 3-2-1 BLAST OFF !!!!!

I hope you were able to learn something new and useful. Thanks for reading, and as always questions and comments are welcomed at magicalballoonmichael@balloonhq.com

Next month I will be Clowning Around.
