Hats for the New Year

Magical Balloon Michael

Michael Philo

Happy new columns everyone. This month I will be sharing a few hats that I really like (sorry none of them are really New Year's Hats - I just like that as a title).

Let's start with one that occurred to me in the middle of the night and I woke up and just had to write it down before going back to sleep. You will need five balloons for this: Three white 260s, one 11" or 16" Globe (here is where to get the 16" globes http://www.larocksmagic.com/balloon/balloons.htm) and one 5" stars around or 5" yellow smile face.

Start by fully inflating two of the white 260s and burping them. Twist a 1" bubble on both and spiral the balloons together until you only have 1" on each, twist off the 1" bubble and twist together to lock the spiral in place. Find the middle and twist it in half then twist all four 1" bubbles around each other. Fully inflate the globe and tie it to the four 1" bubbles.

Inflate the last white 260 leaving a 2" tail. Make two 1" ear twists to form fish lips or horse lips. Make a 10" bubble then wrap the rest of the balloon around to make a hat. Split the loop into two equal bubbles. Add an ear twist to keep the lips upright.

Now the fun part ... wrap the spiral around the hat by tying the globe to the split that you made in the hat and twisting the ear twist around the split in the spiral. I know what you're thinking, why didn't I make the hat first and the spiral second and then wrap it around, and the answer is because I did not think of that until now. Do it whichever way works best for you. Tie the 5" Smile face to the horse lips up top.

Now instead of the 5" smile face to represent the sun how about adding the 5" stars around for a midnight view.

Our next hat is an Alien Circling the Planet hat. You will need two black 260s, a 11 or 16" globe, a 5" alien head and a 6" geo blossom. Start by inflating both black 260s leaving a 2" tail. Make a 1" bubble then a 12" bubble in both. Wrap the 1" bubbles around the ends of the 12" bubbles. Make a 10" bubble in each balloon and lock twist them to form a X on a hat. (Stop here if you're making a "Big X" hat).

Now pick one of the arms and make two 3" loop twists. Tie the globe into the loops like so.

Now fully inflate the 5" alien head and tie off. Thread the knot through the middle of the uninflated geo and tie it to the tail of the second black 260. Inflate the geo and tie it off.

Now onto a cartoon mouse hat that takes two black 5" rounds, a white 260, a black 260, a blush 260 and the very end of a black 260 (scrap).

Start by fully inflating the black 5" rounds and tying them together for the ears. Fully inflate the black 260 and make the standard hat base. Twist off a 4" to 5" bubble above the brim of the hat and twist the ears around it.

Inflate the white 260 to about 10" (or you can use a scrap of white if you have one big enough). Tie it to the ears, bring it down to the brim of the hat and twist it around. Bring it back to the ears and secure it, then cut and tie off any remaining balloon.

Inflate the blush 260 leaving about a 6" tail and tie off. Make two 4" bubbles for the snout followed by three loop twists for the cheeks and lower jaw or mouth. Simply wrap this around the hat at the end of the white 260 to form the face.

Inflate the tail end of the black scrap to about 1" and tie it to the muzzle. Add big ovals for eyes and there's the cartoon mouse hat.

With just a few changes like substituting a black 260 for the rounds to make the ears, making a longer snout, and adding some buck teeth and a lime green 5" round for the hat you have a completely different cartoon character hat.

Thanks for reading.
I hope you are able to use some of these hats.
