Can You Afford Not to go to Convention?

by Rose Burkholder

Twist & Shout 2009 will be in Southern California!  Now, that is the opposite side of the country for us and for others it is the opposite side of the world.  Are you wondering if you can afford to travel for that far and that long?  What is the return on your money of going to a convention?  Now is the time to start planning and I do not think you can afford not to go to convention!

The convention is like a womb…. And I’m not pregnant!... but work with me here…. We are sequestered in a convention center with the best in the world for 4-5 days.  We are being fed vitamins and minerals….(business classes, twisting classes) and dessert….(jam room sharing).  For those 4-5 days we are all equal in the opportunities that are available to us.  We make friends with some of the best people in the world, our differences unite us instead of divide us.  The heart of twisters makes me speechless…. I love you all, and you all have so much to offer and are so willing to do it!

On the heels of two excellent conventions, we have returned home with our heads jammed full of ideas, with a renewed passion to pour new life into the business and with new friends.  As we were making the trek home, we started going through the withdrawal process.  We talk about the old friends that we saw again, the new friends that we’ve been privileged to meet, the fascinating classes that we have taken and learned from and our favorite designs that we are taking home with us

Now the umbilical cord has been cut and we must breathe on our own.  We all must take those ideas and build on them.  Have you written down your goals?  Long, medium and short range goals are all important.  Write them down and do at least one short range goal now.  Break the long range goals down and start the first step.  Put some dates on those medium range goals and start to aim for them.  What ideas have you heard that sounds like something you want to use?  Write them down and put them in your idea folder, which you should refer to periodically and begin implementing them.  Don’t rely on your brain to retain everything…. You have just been on overload of some of the best advice and information you could receive.  Most of you take photos because you know that you have seen too many sculptures to remember them all.  Now you must take practice time and start on those new designs to add them to your repertoire.

You must choose to breathe on your own and you are the only one who can begin or change the course of your business.  The convention is like a hammer, which is a tool, but if you don’t pick up that hammer and put it into your hand, it will not do anything for you (an excellent application that was provided in the Sunday morning service.)  You also need the doctor check-ups (local jams) to meet with other twisters and share experiences and compare notes.  In this industry which is constantly evolving, nobody stays the same, you are either improving because you have set the direction and are working towards it, or you are sliding back down the slope and getting farther behind in this growing industry.

Plan now and start putting back the necessary funds for those conventions for they really are the life-blood of the business. Conventions do make you stand out.  You cannot afford to stay home!
