Bubbleology

March 2001

By Stacey Schmude

All of you who went to TJAM this year saw this, and those of you who didn’t probably heard about it. I did a light sabre by stuffing balloons, and I will include the suggestion I got for it!

To stuff, you need a silver or clear 260 (360 if you want it big), and a colored 160 (or 260 if you want to fill the 360). There are two ways to stuff. You could gently slip the smaller balloon all the way into the larger balloon. If this doesn’t work, you can grab the end of the smaller balloon in the 260, lightly hold the outside balloon, and pull downward. You may have to do this several times to get it straightened, but it works!

For my Light Sabre, you need:
1 Stuffed 260 (Red, blue, or green works best.)
1 Black 260

Blow up the clear (or silver) balloon halfway. Then, blow up the inside balloon until it reaches the end. A 160 blaster (as I’ve heard them called. The little 1-inch wide pumps) work best. I have seen someone do this by mouth (Cheers, Uncle Curt!), but it must be hard. Tie off both ends and trim one, so you have a long stick with a tail.

Next, blow up the black halfway. Make three loops in the top - small, but large enough to give support for the stick (see picture). Make a hand-sized bubble, and three more loops. Then wrap the tail around the larger set (if there is one. If not, just wrap it around one end) and straighten it. There’s your sabre to present to some happy Star Wars fan! (Or your own personal enjoyment!).

Until next month . . . keep on twisting.
