First, Yes the exploder and the cannon work and my experience is that they work very well. There are alternatives to them but they take more work in the special effect world to use safley. If you want to start in this direction the Conwin equipment is a great way to go as it is above all safe, while being simple and reliable. Second, I think that they are worth the cost. The equipment is worth the time and money. I do this sort of work often and can do the same thing in a differant fashion but it costs me time. It's easy to spend the money and have most of the work done. I must caution though, I use One, Two, or Four exploders for most of the Proms that I do. I use a confetti cannon sometimes. For most people "making a break" into this area you can expect one job a year or so until you develop a reputation. You need to price accordingly or the payback is real long. I think that the majority of people that I know that have had unsatisfactory results stem from spending the money and then using the equipment once every two years or so then they loose money in the end. Third, If you do spend the money consider that they are fairly expensive toys. The possibilities are huge as to what you can do. As in other things the key is to practice, practice, practice. Keep notes as to the effects and what you like. But all this play is more expensive than usual as you have other variables to deal with. Hope these help a little in your decision process.
