I believe he was in charge of the very large foil balloon space ship some years back at an IBAC party. I do not remember if it was published in Images magazine. On a smaller scale, you may want to visit http://www.rouseinternational.com/galleries/g.themes/futuristic.htm This web page shows small pictures with links for 17 balloon creations on a "Futuristic" theme. It includes a space ship that is more like Star Trec than Star Wars, but you may find it useful. The space ship, as shown, is only 12" across made with bubbles from #260 balloons. The same design could be made up to 13' across using larger balloons. - - - Tami wrote: >... .. So- sorry list- I'll have to do it here. Renting linen is easy, and a good money maker. You just need to find a supplier that is right for you. Many suppliers require that you have a standing weekly order (I WISH!!) and they have the VERY best prices. The easiest was to go about getting a supplier is to A) call a restaurant or hotel that you are aquainted with (they are of no competition to you) or B) keep your eyes peeled- their trucks are running around all over the place!! (Seriously- you'll start noticing them everywhere :) Linen is great because there is no initial investment on your part. You take the order, call it in to the linen company, they deliver it to you, and then pick it up from you the following week. The ones I have worked with don't have any problem with delivering to your home. Why should they- it's a business. I pay 85¢ each for my 54 X 120's (for 6 or 8 foot oblong tables) and rent them for $4,00. That is the going rate in this area. A person can rent it elsewhere- we are all about the same price. Any caterer or party rental would be happy to rent you linen at a discount- but you can bet your boots it won't be discounted $3.15! I would call a party store or caterer (as a "customer") and find out what they charge for linen, and then charge accordingly. Now the one snag here is that there always seems to be a shortage of skirting- so I bought my own to avoid the hassle. you have to be careful who you buy from. I spent $1500 on skirts that were not the fabric I ordered, and they wouldn't exchange them because they were "custom made'. I now own 10 pain the the butt skirts that are impossible to keep wrinkle free. I got so sick of paying an arm and a leg to get them done, I went out and bought the biggest washer and dryer you can put in your home so I could do it myself. (which is actually kind of nice since I can do like 80 times as much in a load as I used to with my old set) Another snag is that the linen will only come in white. You can get colored- but it is ungodly expensive (my wholesale cost is like $7 on up PER tablecover) and you would have to go either through a caterer, or linen company (not an industrial distributor like I use) to get it. They won't deliver to you- most likely UPS it, and charge the freight charges to you. I had a gal get 8 perwinkle table cloths, and 30 napkins several months ago. I made zero on it because I couldn't bring myself to charge her the $100-some-dollar rental price AND the $30 shipping charge on top of it. What I do is rent white tablecovers and skrts, and push the colored napkins. That's it. Easy easy. Good luck! Linda Gill CBA ------------------------------ From: "David Taylor" Subject: large arch (over water) Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 19:26:53 +1000 Hi Radar. Paula has provided the specs that we used for our arch. I'm just going to give you some troubleshooting tips. 1) With an arch that big guarantee NOTHING to your client. As we discovered, the elements can cause havoc. Our arch was starting to be destroyed by the wind even before it was complete. You cannot say whether your arch will be able to be up for 10 hours or 10 minutes. You are completely at the mercy of mother nature. We also got rain while building the arch so that the steel cable became slick and the wind caused a large number of the balloons to bunch up. Again, there was nothing we could do about it. Unlike a normal arch, you can't pull the thing in to fix the spacing. 2) you need a large team. The people tying are going to get sore hands so you will need to rotate frequently. As the arch gets bigger you will need one person to hold the line steady while someone else ties. 3)Give yourself heaps of time. The 3' balloons aren't going to deflate, so you have time up your sleeve. Use it. Give yourself time to get the thing up and fiddle around. Make sure you have planB and C ready and they can be implemented at a moments notice. 4)Tie on to a fixture. We anchored one side of the arch to a boat. Not a railing, but part of the boat. This gave us a few tonnes of weight, so we knew that it wasn't going to go anywhere. The other end was fed from a motorised winch, also bolted to a boat, so it wasn't going anywhere either. The amount of lift something like this has is staggering. You need to attach to a fixed point. I'm no engineer but I don't know if you'd be able to get enough weight on it otherwise. Good Luck. Your arch will send you MAD with balloons. For those of you who are unaware, Wynn and Lindy made a video showcasing some of their finest designs. Anyway, the decorator said that she used it at a bridal show not long after IBAC and it stopped people in their tracks during the entire event. It's a really well made product, and works very well as a marketing tool if you have not seen it. (I just think they should offer a two-hour version of the tape! The event is an after Wedding rehearsal bar-b-q at a local hall. Most of the guests will be outside around the keg and bar-b-q. They want the outside picnic area decorated. I hope someone has some ideas for me.
