Subject: Re: DNC Balloon Drop What went right?

Rocky,

I certainly don't have the inside story, sitting here
in Illinois. But, the end of the story in one of your
links clearly states:

> Reached last night, Curreri, who had worked for months to
> plan the elaborate drop, told the Globe: "We didn't have
> any problems."

Plus, most of the AP stories out earlier this morning were
the same one, which ended with:

> Stephen Jewett, a DNC official involved in podium operations, said
> there was no malfunction with the balloon drop. The balloons were
> timed to come down slowly, he said, making "for a longer ending,
> which was nice."

To me, it looks like it was someone that didn't know
the details panicking, ranting, and raving over a live mic to
CNN. That obviously shouldn't have happened, and it's sad that
with all the political 'message' vetting for the convention
that the balloon PR 'message' is getting derailed in this
manner.

I watched all I could last night. That drop was spectacular.
It looked evenly timed and lasted well over a half hour. The
balloons were uniformly shaped and inflated, and the 3-footers
looked awesome in such a large space. A later shot of a little
girl standing near the nominee holding her own red 3-footer
was great. Kerry had to go and retrieve it for her at one
point. (later coverage on C-SPAN) The only 'bad' balloons
I saw were on C-SPAN much much later when the balloon strike
had been well underway. Cameras showed a boy using something
to bat at some nearly inflated balloons that made
it to a stage area. But with inflation last weekend and
a 100,000 balloons, some were bound to deflate in the bags.

It's unfortunate that the juicyness of some irate person
saying the f-word on CNN took away from the awesome splendor
of the balloon presentation.

PS: okay, I did wonder if the drop started a few minutes
late when watching... but that could've been staging or
security parameters. (get Kerry and Edwards in place with
their wives and childern). I, too, look forward to hearing
the real story.
