Regarding your balloons popping -- were you fully inflating them and then 
allowing them to go up into a skylight area where the air would be hotter?  
This would cause the balloons to expand and pop.  This same thing has 
happened to us when we inflate in a cooler area and take balloons outside if 
we don't allow for the expansion.
