JMS, (can I call you that?)
I couldn't agree with you more.
I've been scribbling the odd (yes odd) story for major and minor
newspapers, trade journals and newsletters part time and full time for about
25 years now and I take the prize for lazy misspelleded copy.
It's easy to do, just don't concentrate on what your writing, don't bother
about a dictionary and if your using a computer don't worry about spell
check. Of course you REALISE there are often cultural differences in the way
countries like the US and Australia spell words and your computer will often
make that obvious.
Yes I am guilty of repeating the errors listed above and have had some very
"oops!" moments because of them.
I once did a flyer for a mail out of 300 and spelt BALOONS wrong.
Usually, I know what I want to say, how I want to say it and where I'll say
it, it's just that I often miss the mark when trying to say it in a known
language.
The BHQ is a good example of this where some posts are quite serious in
their question and/or answer and a few spots of bad spelling could mean the
difference between flames or bouquets.
I'm an excitable boy and I can easily get too wrapped in the subject matter
(i.e. balloons) and forget about my grammar.
It's a mistake that I continue with I am seeking help for it but the cure
is harder to control than I thought ........... it involves concentration.
Think about it.
Be careful, check, re-check, and even get someone else to proof read your
copy ....... what ever you do avoid printed mistakes at all costs.
Even the greatest of writer down the ages must have made spelling mistakes
....... just check out Shakespeare and you'll know what I mean.
