Wow...well, it sounds to me like maybe this new manager has his hands in a
bunch of pots. I have worked with quite a few managers of banquet halls that
make extra money by selling additional services, and sometimes, that includes
balloons. In other words, if this is under new management, and this is the
case, they see you as stepping on their toes.

Of course, what he did went far beyond unprofessional...dipping into the used
car sales zone! Let's face it; your client recognized both the tasteless
behavior of this man and your obvious talent and hired you over him. Yeah,
he's going to sell some people on his ideology, but chances are you wouldn't
want them as clients anyway.

However, if he takes this to the next level, which is disparagement, I would
consider contacting a lawyer and finding out what your options are. If you
can prove that he has slandered you and your company, lied or misrepresented
you in anyway, or stated anything about you not based on fact, you have a
legal right to sue. This may seem a bit far fetched to some, but believe me,
this is not something to take lightly. Many of us rely on word of mouth and
reputation, and if a "competitor" is out there putting you down to make
themselves look good, who knows what kind of long term effect that can have
on your business. While most will be turned off by the negative approach,
some may develop a real dislike for your company without any justification.

You did the best thing you could by staying professional and poised, and in
the end, it will pay off well beyond this one sale :)
