Gayle,
Many of us have been in this situation regarding the occasional free
balloon.
I myself am a real softy (shhhhhhh! don't tell anyone) for a pair of child's
eyes requesting a balloon. In the past my willingness has seemed to all too
often attract every balloon loving free-loader from across the state and
that has been a sure fire way to change my mood.
I don't mind doing a gesture for someone but I hate feeling like a bunch of
ungrateful vultures are using me.
Experience suggests that if your are going to allow yourself to get into
this situation then you'd be better off having some balloons printed with
your business details. I wouldn't hurt to also have a cup'n'stick also
always on hand to enable you to avoid the filling with helium. They will
also last longer as an air-filled balloon anyway. Remember it's a more
professional appearance to inflate them with a pump rather than by
mouth. This way your going to a bit of effort for them and you can explain
that you don't mind giving them one of your own balloons filled with air but
if they are after a FREE helium fill then ..... well basically forget it
that costs money especially if you use Hi-Float.
They have to make the decision as to what THEY want to do and the
responsibility is taken off you.
In the situation that they want you to fill their balloons with helium (
even for a fee) then I'd suggest a small flyer which explains that your
business only uses quality products and holds no responsibility for balloons
purchased from another source ( even if they are the same brand) This is
also a good way to endorse the quality of your products and avoid any
unnecessary flake which may be caused by using their questionable balloons.
You never know how old their balloons may be and if three break before you
actually fill two balloons then you've just given away the helium for 5
balloons not 2 and they may also now be a little annoyed at you that their
balloons broke while in YOUR hands.
If the mass delegation from the 'give-me-something-for-free' committee
arrives you can limit the number that you hand out for free by claiming you
have no more free printed balloons left. Because you've just tactfully
avoided giving them FREE helium you may be lucky enough to be able to turn
the situation around to your advantage and sell a few extra balloons
................ after all that's what business your in. Remember the value
of something obtained for free is NOTHING
If you can't sell any helium filled balloons and they don't want the
air-filled promotional free-be then ....... well I think it will indicate
the type of ingrates they really are. And I suspect that like me you don't
like feeling your being used.
The ones you do give away are inflated business cards and help to promote
your business.
Remember you'll the best balloon business printed on your own balloons
