G'Day from Downunder,
One easy method is to make your column using the "Square Pack Duplets"
technique. See diagram below. Imagine the balloon pairs are packed tightly
so that row #2 touches row #4. (same rows #3 & #5)
Viewed from Front:
  
0 0  black & white pair
 0   white only visible (the black balloon is behind)
0 0  black & white pair
 0   white only visible
0 0  black & white pair
 0   white only visible

To make the checked pattern more obvious, add another column/garland in
width. But, this time .... reverse the order of duplet packing ie:-
 0   black only visible
0 0  black & white pair
 0   black only visible (the white balloon is behind)
0 0  black & white pair
 0   black only visible
0 0  black & white pair

Imagine each of the diagrams above side-by-side. See how they'd interlock?
