For those that need a refresher, here's the question that was asked: Some people feel that instructional books and video tapes should not be resold, given, borrowed, or rented without the individual consent of the creator. The rationale behind that feeling is that it isn't the media they are contained on that's valuable but the knowledge that's being taught that people are paying for. In other words, if you buy a book and learn from it, you are cheating the author by preventing an additional sale if you choose to lend that book to someone else. Some educational content creators are up in arms because they only make money on sales and see little reason to continue producing these materials if loans and trades are commonplace.
Others feel that so long as additional copies of a book or video are not
made, the exchange of ideas is more than fair. After all, by borrowing or
renting materials, you have a better chance of determining which ones are
most suited for your personal library. Many people can't afford to buy
every book that has a title that appeals to them and are therefore
reluctant to buy any materials without seeing them first. In other words,
they see themselves as being discriminating consumers and only wish to
borrow or rent in order to spend their money in the best possible way.
