So many ideas.  Thanks to all of you and especially to whom ever it was( 
sorry but I lost your adddress/name) that told me to pull hard on the plastic 
legs while turning the screw and it should catch on the nut and tighten... 
and it did... and slowly got back to its original condition.....YIPPEE!   I 
have had this pump for a while.  When the original white color turned to a 
funky stained look I rubber cemented on some wild wrapping paper and made it 
look oh so fine.
