if the threads are stripped why not wrap them in PTFE tape so you can still
remove the base - now I don't know if this product goes by the same name in
the US but here in Britain it is used for tightening threads on compression
fittings for plumbing joints -  note to Jan here in Britain we call football
wait for it - football, not soccer and we call the game our American cousins
play American football or Rugby with padding (but not to their faces though)
