I can quote no studies or statistics, but from my general experience as a 
balloon twister and worrier, and for the very reason Lauren mentioned (the 
balloon coating around the gumball) I would consider putting a gumball in a 
balloon an accident waiting to happen. From a child's perspective, if you 
show him something made to be put in the mouth, most won't know or care 
there's a balloon coating on it. I've had children break twisted balloons to 
get at the small rubber ball inside. The idea of doing that with a gumball 
scares the life out of me.
