I would just go ahead and ask the guy; he's probably used to it.  I wear a 
tip button and people look me straight in the eye and still ask me!  (That's 
when I use the $20 to $40 tip estimate just for fun - always gets a laugh.)  
I would think for the simple things he does, he might be focusing on his 
magic instead.  I know of someone in our area (Denver) who does this.  I 
always have him do magic for us because that's all new to me and I'm easily 
impressed in that area.  That way he's getting a tip and I'm getting 
entertained.
