I agree that it is tacky to check the money in front of the client.
I always wait until I get to the car.  In the event that some one did
give me the wrong amount I can just go back in and handle the matter
discreetly (luckily this has never happened to me).
I also make sure I thank them profusely as I leave. It is good business
and that way I am covered in case of a tip. Thank them as if they gave 
you a huge tip. If they did, so much the better.
