When you call back, say something like this:

"I just realized when I went to write up the invoice for you that we didn't
discuss payment.  I'm sure you probably have your records from last year
and my fee is the same.  Just to avoid confusion on the day of the event, I
thought it best to touch base and confirm everything before I arrive."

That's sort of a gentle way of doing it.  Since it sounds like it's a
different person you dealt with last time, this is also a way of pointing
out, in case the person doesn't know it, that you did get paid in the past.
You'll get back an answer alogn the lines of "yes, we assumed it was the
same as before," or "oh, I thought you volunteered before." If it's the
latter you can then discuss options.
