(Okay, you can't pay the rent with "thank yous", but its still nice) I've had many a parent prod their little ones by asking them, "What do you say to the goofy looking balloon man?" That usually elicits the proper response. You could try that. Problem is, will you feel better with a forced "thank you". Food for thought.
