I have to throw my 2 cents in here, being a co-author of the WAY
Cool Balloon Books, I have done some research on this subject, and Larry
Moss being a publisher has done the research. Our research shows that
copyright laws include a parody law, which allows copyrighted material
to be parodied. Ballon figures are a parody of these copyrighted figures
and are legal, otherwise, we would have not published them in
Totally WAY Cool Balloons. Otherwise satire of movies and books, political
cartoons, and caricatures, would be illegal. That is one of the reasons
we have goofy sound alike names for the balloons. This points out that
the figures are a parody.
Now, this poses a philisophical question, if the balloon figures and names
are not funny, can you be in trouble legally for not being funny???
Does corny count???????
Hmmmmmmmmmm............
