Subject: Mathematical Formula Questions

I need some help from you math and formula wizards out there.
1. How do you calculate the distance between two points that are on opposite
corners of a rectangle? Let's say you have a 20' x 30' dance floor with
columns on each corner, and you want to attach criss-cross arches over the
top. How do you calculate the length of those arches? (I'm actually trying
to calculate a much greater distance, so I want to be as accurate as possible
- but I thought this was an easy to understand example of the problem.)
2. How do you calculate the WIDTH of a column made using various
construction methods such as spiral pack, alternate square pack, duplet
square pack?
I realize you can just create a couple of rows of garland in the balloon
sizes you plan to use, and then measure, but is this the "right" method?? I
want to create a balloon wall to cover up the rear wall of a stage and want
to make sure I plan on the proper number of columns for my wall.
I hope this isn't a completely stupid question ..... if so, please forgive
me!
