Subject: This horrible, sad time--please help with suggestions.
To: balloon hq <email@example.com>
The feelings of sadness, grief, shock, emptiness,
frustration, hurt, and uncontrollable pain are to much
to even explain at this time. We live a couple of
hours from the city, but had many loved ones there and
are still awaiting word on 16 of my sisters
co-workers. They had called by cell phone after the
first hit to tell the office that they were OK. The
building collapsed minutes later and no one has been
heard from since.
Our blood banks have people waiting in line 8-10
hours to give. Besides that, you feel completely
powerless to help. I would like to do something about
that. I would love some help and suggestions.
Many of you might remember several months age when
we did our "Rope of Hope". For those of you who don't,
it was basically a fund raiser for a friends daughter
who was critically injured in an accident. For a
dollar donation, people could buy a balloon and it was
added to the rope. The rope was actually a rainbow
garland(the universal sign of hope). We collected over
$14,000 in a 4 hour period. We actually inflated and
added only about 2500 balloons. We could not keep up.
I would like to try something like this again but
with all the money going to relief efforts to help
those in need at this time. Would there be any people
willing to give some time to come here and help? I
would love suggestions as to what we could do. The
rainbow garland was beautiful, but very time
Some of my thoughts were a balloon release, a huge
American flag, whatever. I would like to go to the
mayor of our town ASAP with some ideas. We have both
an inside and an outside arena in our town. What could
be built as a team effort? Would it be better inside
or out? I know some people won't be to keen on the
release, but I can't think of a more fitting way to
show our support. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a
release while everyone sang God Bless America! I think
it would let people release some of these emotions
that we aren't quite sure what to do with.
Last time my husband and I incurred all the expense
of doing the "Rope of Hope". This time we just can't.
I have already contacted one distributor-Flowers Inc.-
they have committed to donating 1200 balloons. Would
this be my best way to go about getting donations?
What about helium if we decide to go that way?
I really need some input here. I have never really
been in a position to coordinate something like this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If there
is anyone who lives within driving distance and would
like to help, we would welcome that with open arms. No
date has been set. This was just something I thought
of this afternoon while trying to figure out what I
could do to help. I can't think of a better way to
show these bastards that they will not make us shut up
and sit home waiting for them to strike again.
For any one else out there who has been touched by
this unbelievable tragedy, our thoughts and prayers
are with you and your families. God Bless
