A starting point for my design

nebuta face
nebuta side

These drawings were along the lines of the ones they provided for me to work with. Not being incredibly familiar with Japanese art and samurai facial features, this was a necessary element in designing the balloon sculpture.

Many more images were sent to me. They can be viewed at the official nebuta web site.

For those unable to view the Japanese web site, I should point out what these traditional sculptures are about. The nebuta festival every year is a place where sculptures of this nature are made by many different groups. Over the years, similar to the American tradition of the Tournament of Roses parade, these floats have grown in size and complexity. They are made out of paper lanterns. This balloon sculpture was meant to mimic those floats in size and appearance.
